Michael Anderton was born on 14 September 1975 in Valletta.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, History, and Mediterranean Studies from the University of Malta and a Master’s degree in International Affairs from the London School of Economics. He later obtained a doctorate in Political Science from the University of Paris-Sorbonne.
From 2001 to 2020, he was a career diplomat, serving in various roles, including Consul General at the Embassy of Malta in France, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union, and Press Officer for Malta’s EU Council Presidency in Brussels.
Additionally, he served as Chief Diplomatic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malta (2014-2020) and later as Government Spokesperson (2016-2020). On 15 May 2020, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position he held until stepping down on 5 October 2023.
