Cuauhtémoc Ortega is the Chief Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California, overseeing more than 200 attorneys and legal staff across Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and Riverside. A Columbia Law graduate and former clerk to the Hon. Alicemarie Stotler, Ortega is a fierce advocate for justice, with recent victories in three high-profile protest trials involving ICE prosecution.
He lectures at USC Gould School of Law and serves on multiple legal advisory committees championing civil liberties and equity in the legal system.

Ortega and his team recently secured three consecutive not-guilty verdicts in federal trials involving immigration-related protests — a landmark moment in the defense of protest rights.
